One-on-One Assistant (District Wide)

QUALIFICATIONS
The position of One-on-One Assistant shall require a high school diploma or a high school equivalency certification, as well as the physical and mental capacity to perform the major responsibilities of the job assignment.
APPOINTMENT
The Mercer County Special Services School District Board of Education (Board) upon the recommendation of the Superintendent shall make appointment.
CONTRACT AND SALARY
The One on One Assistant is a non-tenured annual salaried employee. The One-on-One Assistant shall be assigned to a specific student (or students) and will serve in this role only as long as the student’s (or students’) individualized education plan (IEP) indicates the need for a One-on-One Assistant. The salary, fringe benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment are as negotiated between the Board and the Mercer County Special Services Education and Therapeutic Association.
REPORTS TO
The One-on-One Assistant shall report to the building principal or other administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS
The One-on-One Assistant is assigned to a student (or students) to perform the duties as described in their IEP’s. The One-on-One Assistant works under the direction of the classroom teachers and/or certified staff to promote the target student’s (or students’) academic achievement, behavioral growth, socio-emotional relationships, and personal development. The One-on-One Assistant must adapt to the particular educational/therapeutic needs of the student(s).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The One-on-One Assistant must demonstrate physical strength, agility, and energy to perform essential job functions and to ensure health, welfare, and safety of all students and of self. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by the employee to perform the essential functions of the job: sitting, standing, reaching, walking, lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, finger dexterity, carrying, repetitive motions, speaking, listening, and visual acuity. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions and elements of this position include but are not limited to the following:
1. Physically restrain the student(s) as required.
2. Maintain and respect confidentiality of student(s) and school personnel information.
3. Adhere strictly to and share in the upholding and enforcing of all Board, school, and administrative policies, regulations, and procedures.
4. Inclusive of placing the student on equipment, dressing, feeding, toileting, and other tasks of hygiene, attend to the needs of the student(s) for whom he/she is responsible.
5. Assist in the management of the student’s behavior, as requested by the teacher, including, but not limited to, direct contact for guiding, escorting, holding, and/or lifting.
6. Take reasonable and responsible steps to keep the student(s) focused and on-task through prompting, cueing, and redirecting student participation.
7. Reinforce personal, social, behavioral, and academic learning goals.
8. Organize and manage materials and activities.
9. Implement teacher-designed follow-up and practice activities.
10. Effectively integrate himself/herself into the classroom environment.
11. Work effectively and collaboratively with other staff members.
12. Maintain cooperative relationships with the teachers, administrators, parents and guardians, and other members of the instructional support staff.
13. Actively participate in ongoing, designated, district-provided training to ensure delivery of relevant, practical behavior management programming, and in other in-services, as assigned.
14. Perform all responsibilities and duties in a professional, courteous, and cooperative manner.
15. Perform other duties incidental to the position of One-on-One Assistant as assigned by the superintendent or his/her designee or the building principal.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy (4220) on evaluation of a One-on-One Assistant and non-tenured support staff employees.
